A limited supply of H1N1 flu vaccine has arrived at Barry University and will be distributed according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Miami-Dade County Health Department guidelines. This collaborative effort has been made possible through the Miami-Dade Medical Reserve Corps (MRC), Barry University’s Student Health Center, and the Division of Nursing. The initial Flu Shot Clinic will be held Friday, Nov. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Landon Student Union Events Room. Immunization will also be available at Miami Dade County Health Department vaccination sites, and other off-campus locations. For information about off-campus sites, visit www.dadehealth.org or www.myflusafety.com or call the Florida Flu Information Line at 877-352-3581.
The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that programs and providers provide the vaccination to all persons in the following five initial target groups (order of target groups does not indicate priority):
The initial supply of H1N1 vaccine for the Barry community contains the live attenuated nasal spray vaccine and the inactivated vaccine. At first, it will be offered to high risk individuals:
• Pregnant women
• People who live with or provide care for infants 6 months old and younger (e.g., parents, siblings, and daycare providers)
• Healthcare and emergency medical services personnel
• Children and young adults ages from 6 months old to 24 years old
• Adults from ages 25 to 64 years who have medical conditions that put them at higher risk for influenza-related complications
When additional supplies arrive, it will be offered to those that do not fall into the above five initial target groups.
Please note that the following individuals must receive medical clearance from a physician prior to vaccination:
• Pregnant women
• Individuals with acute medical conditions (i.e. fever or active infection)
• Those with complications from a weakened immune system (i.e. HIV, cancer, or taking medications such as steroids or chemotherapy) or have a neurological disorder
Individuals receiving the vaccine will be screened to determine which vaccine should be administered, whether it is the live attenuated nasal spray vaccine or the inactivated intramuscular vaccine.
Those who cannot receive the nasal spray vaccine include:
• Children 2 years old and younger
• Pregnant women
• People 50 years of age and older
• People with a medical condition that places them at higher risk for complications from influenza, including those with chronic heart or lung disease, such as asthma or reactive airways disease; people with medical conditions such as diabetes or kidney failure; or people with illnesses that weaken the immune system, or who take medications that can weaken the immune system
• Children 5 years old and younger with a history of recurrent wheezing
• Children or adolescents receiving aspirin therapy
• People who have had Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), a rare disorder of the nervous system, within 6 weeks of getting a flu vaccine
• People who have a severe allergy to chicken eggs or who are allergic to any of the nasal spray vaccine components
In addition, anyone who received a seasonal nasal flu vaccine should wait one month until receiving a nasal H1N1 vaccine.
The H1N1 vaccine will be provided to Barry University Faculty, Staff, and Students only, free of charge. The vaccine will be offered to others as additional supplies arrive. Individuals who are family members of Barry University Faculty, Staff, and Students will not be vaccinated. At the time of vaccination, each individual must present their current Barry University ID card. If your Barry University ID card is not current, a representative from the Student Union ID office will be available to update your ID. Please note that ONLY your Barry ID can be used for identification purposes. Other forms of ID will not be accepted.
