MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Senior left-hander Mike Tomoleoni signed a free-agent contract with the Boston Red Sox and has been assigned to the Class A Lowell Spinners.
Tomoleoni, who pitched for the Buccaneers for five years*, had a 9-5 record with a 3.75 ERA in 132.0 innings. He struck out 115 and walked 104, but held opponents to a .235 batting average, third lowest in program history. His ERA ranks seventh all-time, while his strikeout ratio is eighth.
He is the third player off the Bucs to sign this year, joining John Servidio with the Mets and Andrew Frezza also with the Red Sox. Over the last five years, 10 Bucs have played in the affiliated minor leagues: Alex Meneses (Mariners), Jayson Brown (Angels), Gabriel Casanova (Dodgers), Servidio (Mets), Frezza, Tomoleoni, Alex Gonzalez and Ricky Sanchez (Red Sox), David Bernat (Royals), and Greg Dicso (Reds), while many others have played independent ball.
*He received a medical red-shirt in 2006 after appearing in only six games.
