LAKELAND, Fla.—Bobby Hernandez and Nick Shaw lead four Buccaneers on the Daktronics, Inc., All-South Region baseball team as first-team selections. Both will advance on to the national ballot for consideration for All-America.
Junior Hernandez, who earned Sunshine State Conference pitcher of the year despite missing the first six weeks of the season, posted a 7-0 record and 1.58 ERA to set Buccaneer single season records for winning percentage and ERA. He struck out 51 and walked 19 in 51.1 innings. His best outing was a nine-inning complete-game shutout of Nova Southeastern on April 25.
Sophomore Shaw led the Bucs in batting at .398 and scored 63 runs out of the lead-off slot. He also walked a league-high 53 times for a .528 on-base percentage, which also led the league. Additionally, he made only 12 errors on the season.
The Bucs put two on the second team: senior outfielders Andrew Frezza and John Servidio. Frezza hit a career-high .392 with 61 runs scored and 58 RBI. He also led the team with 17 doubles and tied with 15 steals. He finished his career with 238 hits, a .350 average, 51 doubles, nine triples and 15 homers, while driving in 164 runs and scoring 164. He is fifth in school history in runs scored and doubles, third in hits and RBI and is tied for the career record for triples. He is the only player in school history to both score and drive in 40 runs in three straight seasons.
Servidio hit .366 with 16 doubles, four triples and 14 homers and 69 RBI. He led the team in triples, homers and RBI, finishing the season just one RBI short of Irain Gonzalez’s school record of 70 set in 1998. For his career, he has 128 hits, a .358 average, 25 doubles, seven triples and 15 homers, with 93 RBI and 88 runs scored. He ranks in the top-10 in school history for batting (.358—seventh) and slugging (.592—fourth).
