MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Bobby Hernandez and Nick Shaw added All-America awards to their portfolios when they were selected to the 2008 Daktronics, Inc., All-America Baseball Team on Tuesday.
Junior Hernandez, who earned Sunshine State Conference pitcher of the year despite missing the first six weeks of the season, was named to the third team as a starting pitcher. He posted a 7-0 record and 1.58 ERA to set Buccaneer single season records for winning percentage and ERA. He struck out 51 and walked 19 in 51.1 innings. His best outing was a nine-inning complete-game shutout of Nova Southeastern on April 25.
Sophomore Shaw earned honorable mention at shortstop. He led the Bucs in batting at .398 and scored 63 runs out of the lead-off slot. He also walked a league-high 53 times for a .528 on-base percentage, which also led the league. Additionally, he made only 12 errors on the season.
The two selections doubled the number of All-Americans in Buccaneer history. Nick Corbeil (C-2006) and Orestes Gonzalez (UT-2007) were recognized by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers. Hernandez and Shaw are the first Daktronics All-Americans.
