ORLANDO, Fla.— Nineteen student-athletes were named to the 2009 All-Sunshine State Conference Women’s Tennis Team, announced Thursday by Commissioner Michael J. Marcil. Caroline Wendling was named Freshman of the Year, while Angie Werschel and Yulia Kashelkina earned Second Team honors as well.
A native of Grasse, France, Wendling had a sensational collegiate debut for the No. 13 Buccaneers, posting a 19-2 overall mark and a 7-1 conference record while playing primarily at the #2 position. One of Wendling’s two losses came at the hands of No. 11 Katerina Jiskrova, while the other came against a Division I opponent. Only two of Wendling’s matches went three sets, and she currently carries a 12-match win streak heading into the South Regionals at Lynn.
Werschel and Kashelkina each earned Second Team Singles honors. Werschel posted a 14-4 singles record, playing exclusively from the number one position. Kashelkina went 19-3 on the season from the second and third spots.
In addition to their singles honors, Kashelkina and Werschel earned Doubles Honorable Mention. The pair went 11-6 and 4-1 in conference play.
The Buccaneers are ranked #13 in the nation and will travel to Boca Raton for the South Regional tournament on Thursday, May 7.
