MIAMI SHORES, Fla.— The Barry University women’s tennis team will travel to Lynn to compete in the South Region I Tennis tournament May 7-9.

This is the 15th straight appearance for the women’s team in the regional tournament. The Bucs are ranked #13 in the nation and #5 in the South Region behind Lynn, Valdosta, West Florida, and Rollins. The Bucs are 16-7 on the season and finished third at the SSC Tournament a week ago.

The Bucs are led by the trio of Angie Werschel, Caroline Wendling, and Yulia Kashelkina.  Werschel is ranked #8 in the nation, coming off a 14-4 singles record, exclusively from the number one spot. Caroline Wendling went 19-2 (2-0 at #1, 14-1 at #2, and 3-1 at #3) on the year, which was the best record of anyone on her teams. Kashelkina had a strong season as well, going 19-3 (5-2 at #2 and 14-1 at #3).

The Bucs draw tough competition in the first round against Rollins.  The Tars, ranked #9 in the nation, beat Barry in the regular season. The other side of the bracket pits Flagler against Florida Tech with the winner playing Lynn.

The winner of the Regional I Tennis Tournament will advance to the NCAA Division II Tennis Championship in Altamonte Springs, Fla. May 13-16. The championships consist of a 16-team single elimination tournament.
