ORLANDO – Barry University claimed a share of the Sunshine State Conference Men’s Division Mayors’ Cup as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
In the men's division, points are awarded based on final conference standings in cross country, soccer, basketball, golf, tennis, and baseball. In the women's division, points are awarded for final standing in cross country, volleyball, soccer, basketball, golf, tennis, rowing, and softball. In each category, available points depend on the number of conference schools that sponsor the particular sport.
The tie for the men's division trophy marks only the second time in the history of the Mayors' Cup that a tie occurred at the top of the standings. There had never previously been a tie in the men's division, while there was a tie in the women's division between Florida Southern and Rollins in 1998-99.
Barry clinched a share of the cup along with Florida Southern as each school accumulated 34.5 points in the men's division after a solid year from start to finish. The Buccaneers won their first SSC title in baseball and also won the men's tennis championship. Barry finished second at the golf championship, tied for fourth in basketball, and was fifth in soccer.
The title was the second for the Barry men, both coming in the last three years, while the Buccaneer women have won five cups.
First presented following the 1986-87 academic year, the award has traditionally been sponsored by the mayors of the nine communities in which SSC member institutions are located.
