Teaching Philosophy

Dan Ewing

For me, teaching art history is a way of exploring and recognizing how deeply visual images from the past, both distant and recent, have shaped our culture and our lives. It is a way to experience the power of art throughout time. But art history is also a record of how art has functioned in history, and what it continues to do in today’s society. My hope is that by introducing students to the full range and richness of the visual arts they will come to experience not only art’s capacity for fulfillment, but its ability to transform one’s outlook and understanding, of other times, other places, and other people.
