TAMPA, Fla.—The #4-seeded Barry University men’s soccer team defeated the #1-seeded Rollins Tars 1-0 in the first semifinal game of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament in Tampa on Friday.

The biggest goal of the year came from the foot of Tars-killer and All-Conference player Sascha Koettig with 2:17 seconds left to play. Koettig took a Mark Anderson pass, made a move around a Rollins (16-2-1) defender, and pushed a shot into the back of the net from 15 yards out to break the scoreless tie.

Freshman of the year Johnny Rodrigues earned his seventh clean sheet while only having to save two shots. Rodrigues and the Buccaneer defense only allowed 14 total shots from the Tars.

The first period ended tied at 0-0 after a hard-fought half that saw only seven combined shots from both teams.

The last matchup with the Buccaneers and the Tars on Oct. 24th ended in a 2-0 Barry (13-5-1) win with both goals from Koettig.

The tournament final is Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against the host second-seeded Tampa Spartans. The Spartans dispatched Nova Southeastern 3-0 in the second semifinal on Friday. Tampa clipped the short-handed Buccaneers, who played without four starters, 2-1 during the regular season.

Pregame coverage on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network starts at 12:30 p.m. To listen to the game click on the Stretch Internet link on the Buccaneer homepage at www.gobarrybucs.com.
