    Employer Information Sessions

Employers looking to recruit Barry students set up informational sessions to describe their organization. During these sessions, employers present topics including their clients, products, services, and opportunities within their company. Students may attend these meetings to learn about career options at visiting companies.

Informational Interviews

One of the best ways for a student/job seeker to learn about their career of interest and explore alternatives in a given career field is conducting informational interviews.

An informational interview is meeting with a professional who is working in a student’s desired career path to find out opportunities, learn about the industry and corporate culture, and gain job-search advice. It is also a great strategy to expand your professional network. Informational interview may also lead to mentor relationship or job opportunities.

Please see the resources below to learn more about informational interviewing:

You may schedule an appointment through your Handshake account, by calling the Career Development Center at 305-899-4010 or stopping by our office in Landon 205 to discuss informational interviewing.

Job Shadowing

Job shadowing allows students to observe professionals in the workplace in order to get a realistic view of what the job entails. Students typically shadow a professional for a few hours or up to an entire day to observe the profession and the work environment. This experience allows the student to reflect on whether or not their interests, skills, values and personality are a good fit for the profession. Job shadowing can help students expand their professional network and may lead to internships or job opportunities.

Volunteering

Collaborative Service is one of Barry University’s core commitments and as a result, students are encouraged to engage in volunteering activities. However, students may not realize that volunteering can also be a method to gain experience in their desired field. Students can seek volunteering opportunities within organizations or industries that they are interested in working to gain exposure to the profession. Although many students are focused on obtaining internships, volunteering on a regular basis can provide the student with relevant experience that can be listed on their resume.

The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) provides programs, resources, and services that facilitate University engagement with communities at the local, regional, national, and global levels.

Internships

An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships give students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent.
