You don't even need a separate application to find out if you are eligible for our merit-based scholarships! When you submit your admissions application, we will automatically determine your eligibility for and award your Barry merit-based scholarship upon acceptance.

We also participate in the full array of federal and state financial aid programs. In order to determine your eligibility for these programs, you need submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Since funds may be limited, we encourage you to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible to ensure maximum financial aid eligibility.

Over 90% of our student body receives some form of financial assistance. Our office manages approximately $150 million in student financial aid for eligible students, from a variety of sources. You can afford the benefits of a private college education. We will work with you to determine exactly what you are eligible for.

FAFSAApply for Financial Aid

There are several steps you must take when applying for financial aid. Apply as early as possible and follow the steps outlined below. Feel free to contact the Financial Aid Office if you have any questions.

One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA)

Effective July 1, 2026 (2026–2027 Academic Year)

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), signed into law on July 4, 2025, introduces significant changes to federal student financial aid programs administered by the U.S. Department of Education.

These updates will take effect beginning with the 2026–2027 academic year.

  • The One Big Beautiful Bill Act will make big changes to federal student aid. Some of the changes are clear, but others still need more explanation from the U.S. Department of Education.
  • We know students, families, and staff have a lot of questions—so do we.
  • As we get more official updates, we’ll keep updating this page with the latest and most helpful information.

Private Education Loans

(Alternative Loans)

After exhausting the opportunities available from the federal aid programs, many students will consider private education loans as a source of additional funding. The Office of Financial Aid strongly encourages all students to maximize their eligibility for institutional, federal and state financial aid programs, before borrowing any private education loans. Private education loans should only be considered after all other federal financial aid programs have been exhausted.

Private education loans are non‑federal loans offered by private lending institutions and are based on credit, as well as other criteria established by the lender. These loans often have variable interest rates, may require a credit‑worthy cosigner, and generally provide fewer repayment and borrower protection than federal student loans. Please be advised that terms, interest rates, and repayment options vary by lender. These loans, like federal loans, must be repaid.

Students may borrow up to the Cost of Attendance, less any other financial aid received. Because private education loans are credit‑based, students and co-signers are encouraged to review their credit history and carefully compare loan terms, interest rates, fees, and repayment options among lenders.

Barry University does not endorse or recommend any private lender. Students are free to select any lender of their choice, including lenders not listed on the University’s historical lender list. Students with questions regarding private education loans or additional borrowing eligibility are encouraged to contact the Financial Aid Office for guidance before applying.

Some Items to Consider When Choosing a Private Loan

  • Cosigner Release option
  • Interest Rate
  • Fixed or variable interest rate
  • Fees, including origination and other potential fees
  • Repayment length
  • In-school deferment
  • Loan forgiveness
  • Death and disability benefits
  • Total Cost of the loan

Historical Lender List

Our historical lender list of private education loan providers is comprised of lenders our students have borrowed from over the past three years, and that still offer private education loans to students attending Barry University. You are not required to use private loan lenders on this list.

As part of the application process, students will be required to complete the Private Education Loan Applicant Self-Certification Form (PDF), which is available through the lender's website. The Self-Certification Form should be turned into the lender, not the Financial Aid Office. Certain information needed to complete this form, such as cost of attendance, may be obtained on your Student Self Service portal at https://studentportal.barry.edu.

To assist you in comparing private student loan options, we recommend using ELMSelect, an independent tool that allows you to evaluate lenders, interest rates, repayment terms, and borrower benefits. Click on compare loan options to go to ELMSelect.

Veterans/MilitaryHonorably Discharged Assistance Program

Florida residents who are active duty or honorably discharged members of the Armed Forces who served on or after Sept. 11, 2001, are degree-seeking and have unmet need (as determined by the results of the FAFSA) may be eligible to receive funding from the Honorably Discharged Graduate Assistance Program (HDGAP).

Funds are intended to assist with living expenses during holiday and semester breaks. This program was created by the 2014 Florida Legislature and must be funded every year.

Funding is not guaranteed and is determined by the Florida Legislature and the Florida Office of Student Financial Assistance. The per student amount is based on many factors, including the number of eligible students, the amount the state provides the university and other factors. The amount in the past has varied between $100 and $1000 per student.

GuidelinesTuition Exchange

Barry University is a member of the Tuition Exchange, Inc. (TE), a national scholarship exchange program for dependent children of full-time faculty and staff, with members from approximately 600 U.S. colleges and universities.

Colleges and universities participating in this program have agreed to waive some or all tuition for participants from other member institutions.

OverviewProfessional Judgment and Appeals

Occasionally, unique circumstances influence income for students and/or families. These circumstances have an impact on the ability to pay for college. Students and/or families may need to indicate special circumstances that may not be evident on the FAFSA, or circumstances may have changed.

When these situations arise, we may re-evaluate a student’s aid eligibility based on current circumstances using the Professional Judgment (PJ) process. Students should describe the circumstance in detail and must submit supporting documentation along with their request. A processed FAFSA and completed verification, if selected, must be on file before a PJ can be considered.
