Department of Chemistry and Physics COACH

The COACH Program is an initiative of the Department of Chemistry and Physics at Barry University, in cooperation with Barry's Chemistry Club. Its goal is to foster a love of science and curiosity in upper-elementary and middle-school students in the Miami-Dade area by allowing them to experience hands-on activities and demonstrations led by Barry University students.

These students may be completing projects for service-learning courses, or may be volunteers who enjoy reaching out to community members through science (or both!).

Barry undergraduate students, mentored by faculty, design, prepare, and guide the younger students through the experiments, and discussion of the theory behind them. Undergraduates benefit greatly from this experience, building their confidence and communication skills. COACH accomplishes its goal in two ways:

  1. We make classroom visits to schools in the Miami-Dade area, bringing with us all materials needed for hands-on experiments on topics related to students' curriculum.

  2. We organize field trips for students to experience hands-on science on Barry University's campus. They typically take part in a campus tour, including a detailed tour of Physical Sciences' instrumentation, eat lunch in the university dining hall, and do experiments and witness demonstrations in University laboratories.

If you are a teacher, school official, or someone that organizes a community group for youth in the Miami-Dade area who would like to discuss partnering with COACH, please contact the Program Director, Dr. Tamara Hamilton thamilton@barry.edu.
