Tracks and Curriculum

Master of Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology

Applied Track

In this track, you will:

  • Learn how to consult with athletes, exercisers, and performers to improve their mental skills.
  • Gain practical experience with individuals, teams, and groups both on-campus with Barry Athletics as well as off-campus with other local sport, exercise, and performance organizations.
  • Prepare to practice in dynamic, professional organizations, such as The United States Army and IMG Sport Academies.
  • Accumulate supervised/mentored hours in preparation for becoming a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) with the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP).
  • You will be provided with supervised applied experiences and have the opportunity to begin accumulating hours applicable toward provisional status certification as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC).

The 36-credit hour applied track curriculum includes courses in Performance Enhancement of Psychology, Service Delivery, and Professional Practice. You will be provided with supervised applied experiences and have the opportunity to begin accumulating hours applicable toward Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) certification. You will be responsible for completing, subsequent to graduation, any remaining supervised applied hours and submitting the AASP application materials required for certification. Consult with your advisor in the early stages of planning a program of study so that it can be determined if any additional coursework might be necessary.

Thesis Track

In this track, you will:

  • Learn the research process and investigate the impact of psychological factors on sport, exercise, and performance.
  • Gain opportunities to present at professional conferences and publish in scientific journals.
  • Prepare for doctoral degrees in sport and exercise psychology, counseling, or other psychology related areas in high ranked research I universities.

The 36-credit hour thesis track emphasizes courses in Advanced Statistics and/or Qualitative Methodology, Thesis Proposal and Thesis Defense. If you intend to pursue advanced graduate study leading to the doctoral degree, you will be strongly encouraged to select the "Research" or “Dual” option, which requires a proposal and final thesis presentation defense as well as submission of a written proposal and final thesis.

Dual Track

In this track, you will:

  • Fulfill the criteria from both the applied and thesis tracks

If you are interested in both the applied and research option, you can select the “dual” track, which requires you to fulfill the necessary credits for both tracks. If you choose this option, you would be required to take a total of 45 credits instead of the 36 credits required for the thesis and applied tracks.

Dual SEPP/MBA Degree

In this track, you will:

  • Fulfill the criteria from both the applied and thesis tracks

If you are interested in both the applied and research option, you can select the “dual” track, which requires you to fulfill the necessary credits for both tracks. If you choose this option, you would be required to take a total of 45 credits instead of the 36 credits required for the thesis and applied tracks.
