Graduate Assistantships
Graduate Assistantships are valued at the tuition cost of one course per semester. Graduate assistants must work a minimum of 140 hours a semester. Students must be accepted to the program prior to applying for a graduate assistantship. All degree-seeking students are eligible to apply for assistantships. Assistantships are announced prior to the start of every semester. Applications are available through the Office of Admissions, Enrollment, and Student Services and are sent electronically at the time graduate assistantships are announced.
Center for Human Rights and Social Justice Student Advocate Award
A one-time financial award of $250.00 will be distributed each academic year to a Barry University student that has demonstrated a commitment to human rights and social justice in their community with a focus on one or more of the 5 initiatives of the School of Social Work’s Center for Human Rights and Social Justice. The initiatives are as follows: 1. Combating Human Trafficking, 2. Preventing Sexual Violence, 3. Creating Communities Inclusive of Individuals with Diverse Sexual Orientations and Gender Identities; 4. Advancing Trauma-Informed Research, 5. Education and Practice, and Promoting Wellness in Marginalized Communities.
The purpose of this award is to acknowledge and support the significant contributions by a student, regardless of their field of study, to advance critical human rights and social justice issues impacting our local and global communities.
Students may nominate themselves or be nominated by faculty or staff at Barry University.
Center for Human Rights and Social Justice School of Social Work Doctoral Fellowship
The purpose of this fellowship is to encourage SSW doctoral students to contribute to the development of the Center’s knowledge-base on advancing critical human rights and social justice issues that impact local and global communities. The intent of this research is that its production will be used for dissemination and mobilization purposes.
Funding in the amount of $1500 is available for scholarly research which will advance one or more of the 5 initiatives of the Center for Human Rights and Social Justice. The initiatives include:
- Combating Human Trafficking
- Preventing Sexual Violence
- Creating Communities Inclusive of Individuals with Diverse Sexual Orientations and Gender Identities
- Advancing Trauma-Informed Research, Education and Practice
- Promoting Wellness in Marginalized Communities.
Applicants must submit a brief narrative (one-page maximum) explicitly linking their research to at least one of the Center’s initiatives and a copy of their IRB proposal (proposal is unsubmitted at this point).
Within one year of completion of the research study, recipients (Fellows) of a Center for Human Rights and Social Justice Doctoral Fellowship must agree to mobilize and disseminate knowledge in the following ways:
- Presentation of major finding/knowledge to the Barry University Community
- Submission of a minimum of one peer-reviewed presentation to a preeminent national conference
- Submission of a minimum of one manuscript for publication, preferably in a peer-reviewed journal
*Evidence of compliance with above requirements must be submitted to the Center for Human Rights and Social Justice, as well as the SSW Doctoral Program Chair. Failure to comply with requirements will preclude any future receipt or research funding from the CHRSJ and the SSW.
