The Honors Program at Barry is designed to challenge, enrich, and prepare especially motivated students to pursue their fullest potential. The Monsignor William Barry Memorial Library is located in the center of the beautiful Miami Shores campus of Barry University. The Library is named in loving memory of Monsignor William Barry, one of the founders of Barry University and an inspirational figure in the Catholic Church within the Archdiocese of Miami. The extensive Library research collections include more than 950,000 physical items, over 40,000 print and on-line journal subscriptions, and several thousand on-line books and streaming video resources.

Webinar Trauma-Informed Supervision: 4-Hour Refresher Course Barry University Department of Social Work is offering a 4-hour webinar that will meet criteria for current qualified supervisors to update their required credentials for FS chapter 491.

While the course focuses on essential supervision skills and processes, it also provides an important trauma-informed perspective on the worker/client relationship and also on the supervisor/supervisee relationship.

Learning Objectives : 4 hours

Participants Will:

Recognize historical trends and approaches for providing clinical supervision
Review important state mandates and requirements for providing supervision and monitoring competent and ethical practice
Recognize the connections between client experiences of trauma and the presentation of clinical distress
Gain experience in specific supervisory techniques and skills for enhancing the professional narrative and identity of supervisees.

About the Speaker

Mark S. Smith, PhD

Mark S. Smith, PhD. holds the rank of Associate Professor and has been a faculty member in the School of Social Work at Barry University for 21 years. His undergraduate degree is in Early Childhood Education (University of South Carolina) and his MSW is from San Francisco State University. His practice experience includes work in child welfare, hospital and community-based health care, mental health care in in-patient and out-patient clinic facilities, employee assistance programming, and community organizing and advocacy. He maintains a small practice specializing clinical supervision and in narrative-based work with adults, adolescents, children, and families. Dr. Smith’s areas of interest and expertise include: resiliency-focused clinical practice, social group work, family practice, community responses to disaster and trauma, LGBTQ youth and adults, anti-racist/oppressive social work pedagogy, narrative and constructivist clinical practice, spirituality, and participant-based qualitative research. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the International Association for Social Work with Groups (IASWG) organization.
