Webinar Working With Older Adults Barry University School of Social Work is offering a 3 hour webinar that will include a brief overview of Medicare and related health benefits, as well as common misconceptions and mistakes that may lead to significant personal, caregiver, and financial burdens.

The webinar will also discuss lifestyle and health factors that are important for cognitive vitality through old age based on current research on risk and protective factors for age-related cognitive decline, cognitive impairment, and dementia.

Objectives

    Objective 1

    Participants will be able to describe different healthcare coverage options and benefits available to older adults, as well as penalties and gaps in coverage that some may not be aware of.

    Participants will be able to apply existing rules and regulations to specific cases and identify ways to help older adults avoid common mistakes and address misconceptions.

    Participants will be able to identify the differences between normal aging, cognitive impairment, and dementia and describe early signs that may be indicative of pathology

    Objective 4

    Participants will be able to assess risk and protective factors for cognitive decline and dementia and help clients implement specific behaviors and lifestyle changes that have been found to promote cognitive vitality.

About the Speakers

Dr. Natalia Shtompel

Dr. Natalia Shtompel is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Barry University. She specializes in gerontology/aging, particularly in assessment, cognitive vitality and cognitive decline, access to healthcare, daily functioning and quality of life in older adults, and successful aging. Dr. Shtompel is a former fellow of the Hartford Foundation, a leading organization in research in gerontology. Her other research interests include Yoga, mindfulness, and meditative practices, and she is a certified Yoga teacher. Dr. Shtompel’s clinical background is in comprehensive assessment and psychotherapy of individuals with developmental disabilities and schizophrenia, and intelligence (IQ) and neuropsychological testing. She presents regularly at professional conferences and publishes in peer-reviewed journals.
