Biography

Alice Burch grew up in Ithaca, New York in a large family that fostered a keen interest in education. She matriculated to Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts before moving to Miami Shores in 1973, with her husband George. Alice rode her bike up Northeast 2nd Avenue to Barry College, while raising two children, Tammy and Joe, to obtain her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1982, Barry’s first year as a University. As part of a family veterinary practice, Alice built business experience in finance and budgeting, staffing, procurement, and regulatory compliance. The practice, Burch & Burch DVM LLC, has provided quality veterinary care to the racing thoroughbred in South Florida for over 70 years. Alice’s medical knowledge, appreciation of a healthy lifestyle, and love of Miami Shores contributed to her volunteer direction. As a community activist, she has served in leadership roles on several boards and organizations. One of her formative experiences as a young parent was as co-founder of a parent cooperative preschool. She is a founding member of the Community Learning Partnership of Greater Miami Shores. She served on the Library Board, ten years on the Doctors Charter School Board of Directors; and was twice Chair of the Miami Shores Community Alliance. The Alliance raised over $150,000 during this time for education, the arts, the elderly, and Village events. In 2015, Alice Burch put her love of community and intimate knowledge of Miami Shores to work in a successful run for Miami Shores Village Council. In a tight race, she was elected Mayor by a two-vote margin. Part of her campaign success was attributable to the able assistance of a Barry political science student. In 2019 again with the help of a Barry student, she was re-elected to a four-year term, and currently serves as Vice-Mayor of Miami Shores. In the future, she plans to put her passion for the Village’s walkability, bike-ability, sustainability, and infrastructure to work; along with advocacy for a vital Downtown.
