Biography

Dr. Stephanie Bingham (Barry Biology, ’97) is Professor of Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences. After completing undergraduate studies, she earned a PhD in Biological Sciences with a developmental neuroscience concentration from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and then moved on to post-doctoral training at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She joined the full-time faculty at Barry in 2008. During her tenure at Barry, she has worked diligently to engage her students in and outside of the classroom, encouraging them to stay the course and achieve their goals while also serving as mentors and role models for the future generation. In addition to teaching from freshman to graduate levels in the Biological Sciences for both the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Nursing & Health Sciences, she established a K-12 science education outreach program in 2015, instilling a sense of civic responsibility and engagement in her students who serve as mentors. This science education outreach program provides hands-on science laboratories for 4th and 5th graders on Saturday mornings at a neighboring Title I elementary school. Further, given her commitment to providing students with the tools for success, she established the Department of Biology’s Recruitment & Retention Committee in 2014 and continues to serve as chair. In addition, she serves on multiple university-wide committees including the Student Success Committee and Mission Integration Council and also co-chairs the Academic Affairs Committee of the Faculty Senate. Dr. Bingham has been recognized for her teaching and community engagement contributions including receipt of the inaugural Innovation in Teaching Excellence Award in 2018 and the Community Engagement Educator Award in 2017.
