Biography

Dr. Allen A. Smith, Ph.D., a distinguished Professor of Anatomy, boasts a comprehensive educational background, commencing with an A.B. in Biology from Brown University in 1961 and culminating in a Ph.D. in Anatomy from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1969. His academic journey also includes graduate study at Syracuse University and additional degrees, such as a B.Sc. (summa cum laude) in Chemistry from Widener University in 1986 and an M.A. in Chemistry from Temple University in 1991.

Dr. Smith brings over four decades of teaching expertise to his current role. He served as an Adjunct Professor of Chemistry at Broward County Community College in 2001, an Associate Professor of Anatomy at Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine from 1989 to 2000, and held positions as Associate and Assistant Professor of Biology at Widener University from 1978 to 1989 and 1974 to 1978, respectively.

Throughout his esteemed career, Dr. Smith has earned numerous accolades, including the Johnson Prize in French from Brown University in 1957, the Outstanding Faculty Member Award from Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine in 1996, and consecutive Professor of the Year awards from the same institution in 2002 and 2004. In 2006, he received further recognition as Professor of the Year from the Florida Podiatric Medical Students Association.

Actively engaged in professional societies, Dr. Smith is a member of The Histochemical Society, Biological Stain Commission, American Chemical Society, Florida Academy of Sciences, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and several honor societies. He served as Chair of the South Florida Section of the American Chemical Society in 2000 and held leadership positions within the Florida Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Smith's impactful research contributions are evident in his published works, such as "An improved formulation of the zirconyl hematoxylin stain for acidic mucins" (Biotech. Histochem. 2004) and "Finding the best antibody dilution by repeated immunostaining of the same tissue section" (Biotech. Histochem. 2014). His multifaceted career reflects a dedication to education, research, and active participation in professional communities, solidifying his enduring impact on the field of Anatomy and beyond.
