
Biography
Dr. Guillermo Cancio-Bello is an Assistant Professor of Counseling at Barry University. With specialized training in marriage and family counseling, Dr. Cancio-Bello integrates Natural Family Systems Theory, also known as Bowen Theory, into his clinical, academic, research ,and organizational work. His teaching and scholarship focus on systems thinking, leadership development, and the personal and professional growth of counselors-in-training. He is particularly interested in how individuals function within relational systems—such as families, organizations, and therapeutic relationships—and how increased differentiation of self can promote effective counseling practice and ethical leadership.
As a counselor educator, Dr. Cancio-Bello is passionate about preparing emerging counselors and supervisors to think critically, function reflectively, and navigate complex interpersonal dynamics with clarity and integrity. His research interests include the application of Bowen Theory in counselor education and supervision, leadership development, and the role of self-of-the-therapist work in fostering resilience and professional identity.
Dr. Cancio-Bello currently serves as President of the Florida Association of Marriage and Family Counseling (FAMFC) and is also a board member of the Florida Family Research Network, which works to advance the science of human behavior based on the natural systems theory of the family developed by Murray Bowen.
Outside of his academic work, Dr. Cancio-Bello enjoys painting and reading literature that explores the depth and complexity of the human experience. He values creative expression as a means of self-reflection and personal insight, and brings this perspective into his work with students and professionals alike.
