Biography

Dr. Eva Nowakowski-Sims, Professor, joined the SSW faculty in 2004 and serves as one of the school’s key research professors teaching in the BSW, MSW & doctoral programs. Dr. Nowakowski-Sims is a licensed clinical social worker with more than 20 years of experience working with individuals and families impacted by trauma. 

Dr. Nowakowski-Sims is engaged in collaborative research with Segal Trials, which conducts clinical trials with psychedelics in the treatment of mood disorders and PTSD.  Her Psychedelic Assisted Therapies certification from Naropa University and MAPS training in MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy in the Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Psychedelic Harm Reduction from the Zendo Project offers students information and practice experience on nontraditional psychopharmacological treatment of mental health disorders.  Her research work focuses on somatic movement-based healing interventions for trauma.  A recent project has been a national study, in partnership with the Justice Resource Institute, looking at weightlifting as an effective treatment for trauma.  Dr Nowakowski-Sims offers consultation in the community on Trauma Informed Care and program evaluation.  She has trained numerous community practitioners on body-mind interventions for trauma. Dr. Nowakowski-Sims is a key researcher seasoned in program and outcome evaluation and has worked with numerous community partners and non-profit agencies. Her program evaluation experience encompasses social work programs, community physical and mental health, and family services. She has conducted evaluations of social advocacy and health concentrations among social work students, family violence and sexual abuse programs, and is recently completed evaluating a local community-based crime reduction program through a grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
