Biography

George D. Vera, PhD, is a Professor of Counseling and Program Director for the PhD (Miami Shores) in Counseling in the School of Mental Health and Social Work. Since joining Barry University in 2019, he has drawn on extensive international experience as a scholar, educator, licensed clinician, and clinical supervisor.

Dr. Vera’s research and teaching are grounded in holistic, preventive mental health, with a current focus on educating reflective practitioners through humanistic-constructivist, multicultural-ethical, and emerging neuropedagogical approaches. His scholarship spans counseling pedagogy, clinical education, leadership, and public policy. He is a sought-after expert who frequently delivers invited keynote addresses at major counseling conferences worldwide.

Dr. Vera holds a PhD in Counseling (specializing in Mental Health and Qualitative Research) and an MEd in Mental Health Counseling from the University of New Orleans, an MS in Counseling Psychology (Behavioral and Cognitive Counseling) from CIPPSV, and a BEd in Counseling from the University of Zulia. He has also completed two postdoctoral fellowships: one in clinical counseling residency at the MacFarlan Institute in New Orleans and another in human sciences, focusing on the ethics and education of counseling practitioners in Latin America, at the University of Zulia.

An active leader in the global counseling community, Dr. Vera has held pivotal roles, including Master of Counseling Program Chair and Psychology Department Chair, and is the elected Chair of the International Society for Policy Research and Evaluation in School-Based Counseling. He holds multiple clinical licenses and a qualified supervisor designation (FL, CT, NM), as well as national certifications, including Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Approved Clinical Supervisor, and Telemental Health Provider.
