Biography

Karen A. Callaghan, professor of sociology, earned a BA from La Salle College, and the MA and Ph.D. from the Ohio State University. Callaghan teaches courses on sociology of race, class, and gender, sociology of violence, and community organizing. She has edited a collection of essays on women and beauty, and co-authored a book on the cultural politics of race, violence, and democracy, in addition to publishing several articles on the contemporary family, adolescence, social theory, symbolic violence and images of racial-ethnic identity, and the impacts of globalization. Her most recent work focuses on service-learning and the impact of fair trade on development. Callaghan also serves as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
