Biography

Kimberly A. Shaffer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Promotion & Clinical Practice, in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Kimberly is the Program Coordinator for Barry’s Sport, Exercise, and Performance (SEPP) program. She has been a member of the University since 2016. Prior to working at Barry, she attended Florida State University, where she earned her Master's and Doctorate, in Sport Psychology. Both Kimberly's thesis and doctoral research were focused on the psychological components of athlete retirement, and transition into new career endeavors. The specific aims of the research were to recognize the effects of retirement on former athlete's self-concept clarity and identifying which types of coping lead to a more successful transition. Kimberly's other research interests include exercise psychology and how the principles of behavior modification can be applied to health and wellness. Kimberly also works as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) for the student athletes on campus. She seeks to foster athlete's mental skills and works towards enhancing their self-awareness. She supervises and coordinates the applied consulting opportunities for the Graduate SEPP Program and serves as a member of the University’s Athletic Resources for Mental Health Support (A.R.M.S.) team. Kimberly and her husband (Dr. Cory Shaffer) spend their time being overly invested in all things sports related, especially when it comes to the Florida State Seminoles.
