Dr. Laura Alonso-Gallo, Ph.D.

American Literature, Latino/a Literature, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, and Comparative Literature.

Laura P. Alonso-Gallo is Professor of English at Barry University. She earned her academic degrees in English Philology from the prestigious Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain. In 1997 she was appointed Professor of American Literature at the University of Huelva, Spain, where she served as Chair of the English Department (1997-2000) and Director of International Relations for the Universidad de Huelva. She has lectured on Spanish, Latin American, and U.S. literature both in Spain and the United States. She taught at Duke University (1989-1991), the Universidad de Sevilla, Spain (1991-1993), the UNC Chapel Hill Program in Seville, Spain, and was a Visiting Professor at the University of Miami (2000) and Barry University (2004-2011). Renowned institutions have awarded her scholarships and grants, including Spain's Ministry of Education, Dartmouth College through the Charles Dana Foundation, and the Salzburg Seminar. She is recipient of the 2020 Sister Jeanne O'Laughlin Scholarship Award with which Barry University recognized her exceptional scholarly achievements. Her scholarly work shows a wide range of interests within U.S. and Latin American Studies. She is the editor of the collections of critical essays Guayaba Sweet: Literatura Cubana en Estados Unidos (2003) and critical interviews Voces de América: Entrevistas a escritores americanos / American Voices: Interviews with American Writers (2004). She has also co-edited other critical volumes: Evolving Origins, Transplanting Cultures: Literary Legacies of the New Americans (2002), Myth and Ritual in African American and Native American Literatures (2001), El sexo en la literatura (1997), and La mujer: del texto al contexto (1996). She recently co-edited with with Belén Rodríguez-Mourelo (Aduana Vieja) Identidad y postnacionalismo en la cultura cubana (2019), a collection of academic essays, reflections and interviews of Cuban artists and writers to Cuban American studies which was welcomed by writers and academics at the Miami Book Fair in November of 2019. Her dedicated service as reviewer in academic journals and as consultant on editorial boards has broadened Dr. Alonso-Gallo's academic status internationally. In Miami she serves at the Board of Directors of Spain-Florida 500 Years Foundation and she is also involved in other educational and non-profit organizations in the U.S. and abroad, such as Americans for Immigrant Justice and FIU's CasaCuba. Dr. Laura Alonso-Gallo was born in Madrid and grew up in Seville, Spain. She is an enthusiastic faculty member who devotes herself to bringing the joy of literature and the humanities to the diverse community of Barry students. She prides in provoking her students intellectually and in mentoring them beyond college. She is grateful to Barry University for the opportunity to carry out its mission by serving others and learning from students and peers.
