Dr. Maria Teahan’s interest lie in community critical incident response, first responders/military and post-traumatic growth, end-of-life, traumatic grief and loss, neurobiology of trauma, and bereavement.
Biography
Dr. Teahan joined the School of Social Work as an adjunct professor in 2006 teaching Policy, Professional Seminars, human behavior and advanced practice courses. In 2008 she became the MSW Program Director. In 2018 she was promoted to Associate Dean and now presently holds the position as Interim Dean of the School of Social Work. Prior to joining Barry University School of Social Work, she served as Bereavement Manager and then as the Director of Supportive Care for a local hospice for ten years. She has over 44 years of extensive practice experience in child and family, health care, end-of-life, grief and traumatic loss and critical incident training. Dr. Teahan is also trained in EMDR, and has presented or co-authored seminars, training materials and workshops in the areas of grief and traumatic loss and critical incident stress management locally, nationally and internationally. She also authored a chapter in the Hospice Foundation of America’s Living with Grief series on Ethical Dilemmas at the end of Life entitled Case Study: Patient autonomy, beneficence, medical futility and the hospice health care provider (2005). Dr. Teahan is the Clinical Director of Palm Beach County Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) team, Broward County CISM team and Boca and Palm Beach Gardens Police Departments’ CISM teams.
