
Biography
Doctor Fernandez received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from City University of New York – Lehman College in the Bronx, New York, attended Florida International University for a Master in Public Health degree in Miami, Florida and graduated with an Osteopathic Medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in East Lansing, Michigan.
He completed an Internship at Southeastern Medical Center in North Miami Beach, Florida and a Family Medicine Residency At Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine (Formally: Southeastern University of the Health Sciences). He also completed two fellowships including the United States Public Health Service Primary Care Policy Fellowship in Rockville, Maryland and the Primary Care Faculty Development Fellowship Program at Michigan State University—College of Human Medicine Office of Medical Education—Research and Development.
He was involved in research programs at Mount Sinai Hospital Pulmonary Department in Miami Beach, Florida. The research involved cardiopulmonary physiology, drug effects, and environmental impact studies.
Honors include in 1992 achieved Fellow status in the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and 1993 Florida International University Outstanding Alumnus Award.
He is licensed in Florida with Board Certification by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians and the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians.
Doctor Fernandez has held academic and administrative positions at several Health Education institutions including Rowan University (formerly UMDNJ) School of Osteopathic Medicine, Nova Southeastern University where he was Deputy Dean at the Osteopathic Medical School and Dean at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. He also was Vice Provost at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine Bradenton Florida campus. He was Director of the Public Health program at Barry University Graduate Medical Sciences Division. He was Vice President for Educational Affairs and Chief Academic officer at Larkin Community Hospital.
His clinical practice has been involved with primary care, Population Health and health policy at Medpartners, Aventura Hospital, CAC, ContinuCare, Humana, IMC Health Centers and Crossover Health before enthusiastically returning to Barry University as Professor of Medical Education in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences Physician Assistant Program.
