Areas of Interest
Dr. Kolbe’s main areas of interest include institutional child abuse, survey research methods, social work with survivors of torture, interventions to reduce violence and extremist terrorism in conflict-affected areas, social work practice with members of armed groups, and international social work.
Biography
Athena Kolbe, Ph.D., LCSW, MATS, MA, social work faculty in 2022. She teaches at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels, including human behavior, trauma, practice methods, and research courses. Dr. Kolbe’s professional experience includes serving as an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina and a social work instructor at the State University of New York and the Institute of Social Work and Social Science in Haiti. In an effort to promote evidence-based practice in the security and social welfare sectors, she consults regularly on research and educational projects with local and international nongovernmental organizations, United Nations agencies, and both United States and foreign government bodies. Dr. Kolbe has also worked as a journalist, a researcher, and a clinical social worker.
