Barry Urban Garden

The Barry Urban Garden is a community agriculture initiative that provides organic produce to low-income residents of Miami neighborhoods that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has categorized as urban food deserts. Campus and community members work together to implement projects within the framework of the initiative, which offers experiential learning opportunities to students and engaged scholarship opportunities to faculty. The BUG is based on the principles and practice of permaculture, a system that emphasizes sustainability, integration, and cooperation. The initiative includes the Barry FairShare project.

To learn more about the BUG and how you can get involved, contact CCSI Program Facilitator Kaitlyn Gallagher at kgallagher@barry.edu or service@barry.edu.

BARRY FAIRSHARE

Barry FairShare is a community-supported agriculture project focused on providing locally sourced organic produce to campus. The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) developed the project in partnership with Urban GreenWorks, a local environmental and food-access organization whose Cerasee Farm is located in Liberty City. Faculty, staff, and students participate in Barry FairShare by purchasing produce harvested from farms in neighborhoods near the university’s main campus. Participants may purchase a full share or a half share of assorted fruits, vegetables, and herbs sourced from a cooperative of South Florida farmers. All produce is non-certified organic and harvested from sustainable small farms.
