Dr. Eileen McDonough A Career Well Played

Dr. Eileen McDonough

Dr. Eileen McDonough served Barry for over 52 years and retired effective June 30, 2023. Dr. McDonough served in various roles throughout her time at Barry and has made a tremendous impact in the lives of our students. She began her teaching career at Barry as an instructor of chemistry from 1970 to 1976 and was promoted to assistant professor of chemistry from 1976 to 1987. In 1987, she was promoted to an associate professor of education and in 1997 to full professor of education. Following her faculty roles, she transitioned into other leadership positions, including in the Division of Student Affairs, and held the associate vice president position. 

She served as the Barry University faculty athletics representative since the inception of the athletic program in 1983. She was responsible for initial eligibility for all new freshmen and transfer student athletes. Dr. McDonough was the University’s contact person for the Initial Eligibility Center and worked with prospective student athletes on their eligibility process. Dr. McDonough also served as chair of the Commencement Committee for over 30 years and as the University’s ADA coordinator.

Athletic Director Mike Covone retired from Barry on June 30 after leading Buccaneer athletics to 26 NCAA Division II national championships in eight different sports. Covone has been one of the most respected leaders in college athletics, who helped build high-quality athletic programs in men’s and women’s sports that win consistently at the highest levels and produce student athletes who graduate and excel in the classroom and community.

On July 1, Dr. Scott Smith was appointed associate vice president and director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation. Smith is a seasoned university administrator with over two decades of professional experience in student development for Catholic higher education institutions. He joined Barry in 2011 in a senior leadership role in student affairs and later transitioned to leading mission and student engagement.

Crafty Scholars Barry University is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded a $4.5 million grant by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) for the establishment of the Barry University CRAFT Scholars program.

CRAFT Scholars, which stands for Cultivating Resilience through Agriculture and Food Training, is a transformative initiative aimed at attracting, retaining, and training a diverse group of undergraduate students who will be well-prepared to enter the USDA workforce.

Fare Thee Well A passionate supporter of Barry University and our students, Trustee Emeritus Luigi Salvaneschi passed away in October 2022.

Luigi was committed to helping first-generation students like himself succeed. He once said: “To give a future to young people that they might never have thought of, that is what I will leave behind.” The Barry University family continues to keep his wife DiDi in our thoughts and prayers.

Commencement 2023 Barry’s 2023 Commencement ceremonies celebrated the hard-earned achievements of our student graduates.
