Looking Back in Time

Barry University School of Nursing

By Amanda Gonzalez Garcia ’23

If you head over to Wiegand Hall, you will find some great coffee and this historic display created by College of Health and Wellness Operations Manager Maria Herrera alongside her team.

The display offers both archived and modern objects from the nursing program, which became the Barry University School of Nursing in September

Isoflurane is a vaporizer canister from an anesthesia machine-ventilator. Vaporizers change inhalational anesthesia agents from liquid to gas and allow patients to inhale the anesthesia gas through the anesthesia circuit. Anesthesia providers pour the liquid into the vaporizer and fill it to a level appropriate for delivery.

Barry University was once Barry College and the nursing caps changed from “BC” to “BU.”

A visiting nurse kit (this one is from the 1920s) had essential items that nurses would use to treat sick patients in the comfort of their homes.
