The Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology & Sport Sciences with Rehabilitation Specialization is designed to prepare students for graduate or professional school and a wide range of careers in the health and fitness industry. This science-based track examines the role of exercise and physical activity in preventing chronic diseases, enhancing mental and physical well-being, and optimizing human performance.

The curriculum includes foundational courses in anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and psychology, along with hands-on laboratory experience in exercise physiology, biomechanics, and sport psychology. Students also complete up to 480 hours of clinical or research internship with a focus on health and/or fitness, offering real-world experience and valuable leadership opportunities.

    Our Exercise Physiology program is part of the STEM disciplines, allowing international students to apply for extended Optional Practical Training (OPT), which significantly enhances post-graduation career opportunities in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Strength & Conditioning, Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation gaining valuable experience in the U.S. and advancing their careers globally.

Program Requirements

The Kinesiology and Sport Sciences with Rehabilitation Specialization requires 39 credit hours (beyond the SES core of 22 hours) which are specific to the Rehabilitation Specialization which prepares students to attempt professional certification examinations. A student majoring in KSS Rehabilitation Specialization must take the ACSM Health/Fitness Specialist or the NSCA Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification examination prior to graduation. The minimum grade of C is required in all major, SES core, and co-requisite courses.

  • By the end of the fourth semester of study, Kinesiology & Sport Sciences with Rehabilitation Specialization student majors must have earned at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA. Students not meeting or maintaining the program cumulative GPA requirement will be notified and given one additional semester to meet or exceed the minimum cumulative GPA. If at the end of the fourth semester of study the student still has not earned the required program cumulative GPA, they will be dismissed from the major.

  • Students must pass SES-361 Exercise Physiology and SES-361L Exercise Physiology Lab, and SES-370 Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription and SES-370L Lab, with a C or better and show proof of current CPR/AED certification prior to being admitted to SES-486 Practicum. Practicum in KSS -R requires at least six hours per week of guided field experience in laboratory testing and research, exercise leadership, exercise prescription and programming, and fitness assessment.     SES-499 (Internship in Kinesiology & Sport Sciences) is a field experience in a hospital-based wellness or cardiac rehabilitation program, a corporate or community fitness center, or sports training facility. Completion of SES-486 is required in order to receive approval from the Internship Coordinator and Program Director to enroll in SES-499. (See other requirements under course descriptions.) SES 499: Internship meets the integrative experience requirement for graduation.

  • A variety of assessment and evaluation methods are utilized to effectively measure student learning outcomes. These methods are chosen to align with course objectives and offer a comprehensive evaluation of students' knowledge, skills, and competencies. Key assessment methods include examinations covering various question formats, assignments, and projects encouraging real-world application, active class participation fostering engagement and comprehension, quizzes for monitoring progress, online assessments providing flexibility, peer and self-assessment promoting reflective learning, and clear rubrics ensuring transparency and consistency. Through this multifaceted approach, we strive to create a dynamic learning environment that supports student success and academic excellence while continuously adapting to meet evolving needs and standards.

Experiential Learning Internships

In this exciting portion of the program, you will have the opportunity to integrate knowledge you have learned during course work and through on-campus experiences in actual practice situations. 

The 480-hour KSS-R internship gives you the opportunity to have an in-depth field experience in a hospital-based wellness or cardiac rehabilitation program, a corporate fitness center, or other off-campus fitness/exercise facility.

Admissions Overview Are you a Transfer or an International Student?

You can apply to Barry whenever it’s convenient for you. We accept applications on a rolling basis, but it’s always better to apply sooner than later. You’re considered a transfer applicant when you have at least 12 college level credits from a regionally accredited college or university. Remember, you may have to apply separately to specific programs, so please review the academic requirements for your intended major.
If you are an international student, applying as early as possible is in your best interest in order to allow ample time for immigration processing.
