The Honors Program at Barry is designed to challenge, enrich, and prepare especially motivated students to pursue their fullest potential. By participating in a rigorous curriculum rounded out by an array of edifying and interactive events, students explore crucial issues that we face in our daily lives. Students are given the space for discussion and debate and the opportunity to learn from experts in their fields. The Monsignor William Barry Memorial Library is located in the center of the beautiful Miami Shores campus of Barry University. The Library is named in loving memory of Monsignor William Barry, one of the founders of Barry University and an inspirational figure in the Catholic Church within the Archdiocese of Miami. The extensive Library research collections include more than 950,000 physical items, over 40,000 print and on-line journal subscriptions, and several thousand on-line books and streaming video resources.

Technology and Innovation

The latest technological innovations permeate the curriculum from the classroom setting to state-of-the-art technology in clinics.  

For example, the school is now using the Hippo virtual care device in our “Intro to Patient Care course in the Freshman Year”. Hippo is voice-activated, hands-free, and resembles goggles. It brings streaming doctor-patient visits from clinics to the classroom for a real-time clinical experience. It allows healthcare providers and educators to bridge the gap between physical and virtual care.

The mission of Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine Continuing Education is to provide comprehensive continuing education to medical practitioners through appropriate learning activities. These activities will serve to develop or augment the knowledge, skills, and professional performance of health care providers as they provide services to patients, the public, and the profession. 

We will offer CE activities for physicians (DPM) as well as other medical providers who wish to attend the programs. Our offerings will include the following formats: lectures, audio and video taped programs, teleconferences, journal readings and internet programs.

Curriculum and Degree Plan

The curriculum of the School of Podiatric Medicine leading to the DPM degree normally takes four years to complete. The first two years mostly involve didactic pre-clinical science courses (many with laboratories, see course list below). The third and fourth years involve primarily, but not exclusively, clinical didactic courses and clinical rotations through several local hospitals and the Barry University Foot and Ankle Institute Clinics. All courses in the curriculum, unless noted as electives, are required; course substitutions are not allowed. 

Students must complete all requirements for the DPM degree within six years of initial matriculation into any podiatric medicine program. All courses must be completed prior to graduation. Podiatric medical students may be required by the Dean or Associate Academic Dean to take a reduced number of courses (due to withdrawals, course failures in their first or second year, or other extenuating circumstances), which will extend the duration of the program beyond four years. 

The following curriculum is continuously reviewed and is therefore subject to change. 

As with any medical school, curriculum is intense for the Barry University Podiatric Medicine program. In a world of limitless and changing information, so much must be acquired in four years. Every effort is made to make this process thorough and exacting. At the end of your four years of training, you will feel confident to count yourself among the best trained podiatric physicians in the world.

Dual Degree Doctor of Podiatric Medicine and Master of Business Administration

As an academically qualified student enrolled in the School of Podiatric Medicine, you can obtain the dual degree Doctor of Podiatric Medicine/Master of Business Administration (DPM/MBA) in four years of study. If accepted into the dual degree program, in addition to the podiatric medical curriculum, eligible students must complete 27 semester hours of required graduate business core courses. 

This dual degree option gives you an understanding of the economics involved in managing a business and helps advance awareness about public health. You will learn to use financial tools and gain skills necessary to effectively manage the day-to-day operations of a medical office.

During the first year of enrollment in the School of Podiatric Medicine, students must indicate their interest in obtaining the dual degree. 

MBA candidates may have to take up to eight business workshops, depending on previous academic preparation. The workshops are offered periodically throughout the year.

School of Podiatric Medicine Faculty & Staff

As one of the smallest programs in the country, our program is dedicated exclusively to podiatric medicine—it is never combined with any other program. This means that you are the sole focus of your faculty. 95% of our faculty teach only in the podiatric medicine program—YOU are their priority!  Since our faculty serve as academic advisors, they can also provide you with personal attention and guidance.   

Our pre-clinical faculty are highly trained professionals with doctoral degree in their field of expertise.  Many of our clinical faculty work with you in both the classroom and the clinic—where your practice and theory are consistently integrated and reinforced. 

Barry Clinics Barry University Foot and Ankle Institute

Barry University has three dedicated, hospital-based, foot and ankle clinics in the greater Miami area. These are located at Mercy Hospital, Jackson North Medical Center, and Mount Sinai Hospital. During the rigorous four-year podiatric medical school curriculum, students spend a portion of their third year rotating through these clinics.

The Barry University clinics provide state-of -the-art care and treatment for disorders of the foot and ankle. The clinics provide a center of excellence for teaching both students and residents of podiatric medicine. Our new Director of Clinical Education has implemented the latest technology to track and assess student performance in the clinical setting. High quality, ethical, personal care, utilizing evidence-based medicine is the standard for all clinics, regardless of a patient's ability to pay. Each patient is personally attended to by board-certified university faculty members, medical students, and hospital residents.

In addition to the three Barry University clinics, podiatric medical students spend the remainder of their third year rotating through clinics with a diverse array of medical disciplines. These include general surgery, emergency room, wound care, internal medicine, orthotics, and radiology. The students interact with physicians and practitioners in a variety of clinical environments, and learn the essential critical thinking and decision-making skills that will ultimately make them a podiatric physician of high quality. Importantly, students learn the vital role that podiatric physicians play in the maintenance of good health.

Barry University Foot and Ankle Institute Clinical Trials in Wound Care

The Barry University Foot and Ankle Institute was established in 1986 as part of the clinical training component of the doctoral program in podiatric medicine.

Research Initiatives / Brand Center Paul & Margaret Brand Research Center

South Florida is saddled with one of the worst diabetic amputation rates in the nation – if not the world – and to battle the diabetic epidemic and its complications, the Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine established the "Paul & Margaret Brand Research Center." 

Doctors Paul and Margaret Brand are medical pioneers whose groundbreaking research, from Louisiana to India, made it possible for insensate patients, including those with leprosy and diabetes, to function normally despite enormous handicaps. The landmark Paul & Margaret Brand Research Center at Barry University furthers the Brands' legacy by engaging in collaborative research to reduce diabetic foot complications, including ulcers and amputations.

Bahamas Medical Mission

The Barry University Bahamas Medical Mission Trip offers critical podiatric and diabetic wound care to the Bahamas' residents, especially those facing amputation due to untreated conditions. Initiated after Hurricane Dorian in 2019, this ongoing mission—supported by the university and the Bahamas Ministry of Health—aims to improve health outcomes and quality of life through regular visits and expert care from medical students and faculty.

Outreach The Dr. Charles C. Southerland Jr. Yucatan Children's Project

The Dr. Charles C. Southerland Jr. Yucatan Children's Project began as an outgrowth of humanitarian relief to the Yucatan in 1988 after Hurricane Gilbert ripped through the region. Gilbert, a category 5 storm, left 500 people dead and widespread destruction. Relief aid to the region came from throughout the Western Hemisphere.

Dr. Charles C. Southerland, working with other health care professionals and public officials in Mexico hoped to bring medical care to the crippled children in the Yucatan as an ongoing project.

 

Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine offers its students many opportunities to volunteer in the local and global community consistent with the mission of the institution. Select third- and fourth-year students are permitted to participate in the Yucatan Project mission trips, which normally take place several times per year. The team usually consists of one surgeon, three residents and one student per trip.

A humanitarian effort of the Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine which provides indigent crippled children from the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico with surgical care of deformed limbs.

Community Service Initiatives

Located in Adrian 208 & 209, the CCSI organizes a variety of programs, projects, and events in support of its mission. The major ones (except those restricted to faculty) are summarized below. 

  • Students eligible for Federal Work-Study are placed in community settings, with public institutions and nonprofit organizations, where they assist in meeting the needs of disadvantaged populations. 

  • The Barry Service Corps consists of all students in Federal Work-Study Community Service and other students interested in civic learning and leadership development. This program is designed to foster civic-mindedness and promote social justice. 

  • Students, including student clubs/organizations, engage in service with the community on designated days. These include (Barry) Founders' Day of Service, International Coastal Cleanup Day, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

  • During Fall and Spring Break, students usually take trips to underserved communities in the United States and abroad, where they collaborate typically with nonprofit or faith-based organizations to work intensively on projects addressing social issues. 

  • Students, faculty, and staff participate in this nonpartisan initiative that promotes civic learning and democratic (political) engagement. 

  • Community partners come to campus for this annual event, offering opportunities for service and research in various communities. 

  • Students and alumni, faculty and staff, and community partners take part in facilitated forums, exploring specific social issues and working towards practical solutions.

  • Students make oral and poster presentations at this annual event on the last Wednesday of March.  

  • The University, together with community partners, celebrate community-engaged learning, teaching, service, and scholarship at this major annual event in March. The Community Impact Award is presented to students for exemplary civic engagement—including service, research, and advocacy—that has a measurable impact on the community. 

  • This is more than a garden; it is a values-based community agriculture initiative that provides produce to food-insecure neighborhoods and experiential learning opportunities to students. 

Clerkship and Post-Grad Training Office of Post-Graduate Placement and Clerkships

The Podiatric Medicine Program is an intensive four-year program designed to provide you with a broad base of medical knowledge and extensive clinical experience.

After graduation students are encouraged to continue preparing for their careers by pursuing a residency program. Although there are more residency positions than graduating students, the fact that there are unplaced graduates from previous years seeking residencies means that there is no guarantee that every graduating student will be successful in acquiring a residency program. For the past eight years, students in Barry University's Podiatric Medicine Program have had a consistent overall above-average performance on the National Board Examinations.

Caring and experienced professors who take a special interest in each student support the rigorous program. Barry University offers diversity unparalleled by any other school of podiatric medicine. Our program has the highest percentage of women and minority students of any podiatric medical school in the country. Barry University's Podiatric Medicine Program is one of only two schools to maintain association with an accredited, independent, comprehensive, coeducational University. Residency

After finishing medical school, podiatry residents embark on residency training to hone their clinical and surgical skills for their future careers. Residency typically lasts 3 years and allows residents to train under the supervision of experienced attending podiatrists across a range of specialties. HCA Florida Mercy Hospital and Jackson North Medical Center are two facilities that provide podiatry residency programs in affiliation with Barry University's podiatry school. 

At these residency sites, postgraduate year 1 residents focus primarily on learning basic podiatry skills while also being introduced to surgery. As they progress to postgraduate years 2 through 3, residents gradually take on more complex cases and procedures. They manage higher volumes of patients in the clinic and operating room, as well as supervise junior residents. This allows senior residents to further refine their medical and surgical competencies related to the entire scope of foot and ankle care prior to entering independent podiatry practice. 

Key subspecialty rotations that residents undertake include rearfoot/ankle reconstructive surgery, diabetic limb salvage, wound care, pediatrics, sports medicine, and trauma. Residents also complete regular rotations in internal medicine, orthopedic surgery, vascular surgery, and emergency medicine to complement their podiatric training. Through this wide-ranging clinical exposure coupled with lectures and research opportunities, HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, Jackson North Medical Center, and other Barry University-affiliated sites aim to produce highly skilled podiatrists prepared for delivering exceptional foot and ankle treatment to patients in the community.
